Teaching Development Fellowships
This program supports part-time and full-time college faculty undertaking three to five months of research. The research must be intended to improve applicants’ ability to teach undergraduate courses that they already offer. This program is jointly sponsored by the Division of Research Programs.

Staging Shakespeare in the Classroom.
Rhonda Gail Knight of Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina, received a Teaching Development Fellowship grant in 2009. Studying the original staging practices of early modern drama will help her improve her upper-level course on Shakespeare. For her project, “Staging Shakespeare in the Classroom,” she plans to observe rehearsals and performances at the American Shakespeare Center, in which actors employ techniques similar to those used by early modern actors. She will also conduct research on early modern staging at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., and the Alderman Library at the University of Virginia. Back in the classroom, Knight will develop activities that help students experience the plays as performances rather than just literary texts.
